The Kumamoto ~ Shin-Minamata section of the Kyushu Shinkansen line may reopen as early as the afternoon of Apr. 27 (Wed.), a day earlier than previously thought. Officials report that the removal of the derailed train, which was hindering repair work, went more smoothly than expected. If the test drive scheduled for Apr. 27 (Wed.) goes well, then it will reopen that afternoon. All other sections of the Kyushu Shinkansen are already open, but running a limited service (for special schedule (updated 4/25), click here). The opening of the Kumamoto ~ Shin-Minamata section means that the entire Kagoshima Route will once again be serviced by the Shinkansen, providing access between Hakata and Kagoshima Chuo.
