A joint venture between Hirotsu BioSciences (a venture company from Kyushu University) and Hitachi will make use of nematodes to help detect cancer. Measuring 1mm in length, nematodes are drawn to the smell of urine in patients’ urine. With researchers having reported a 93.8% accuracy rate in detecting cancer among patients, Hitachi is developing a system that will automatically detect their movement, with the aim of making the service available in cases not covered by medical insurance from the end of 2019 to the start of 2020.
