Seniors Can Turn In Drivers Licenses For Subway Rebates

Fukuoka City has begun a new program in which senior citizens who turn in their driver’s license can get rebates on subway travel. The move is an effort to encourage use of public transportation and curb the number of traffic accidents involving elderly drivers behind the wheel. Upon returning their license, senior citizens receive a “Driving History Certificate.” This can be presented when buying a “Chika Pass 65”, which is a train pass for residents over 65 years old offering unlimited subway use for ¥6,000 a month. The points they earn on their pass can be used in the subway and other places such as convenience stores. Source: Sankei News, 5/4/2017
