Fukuoka Duty Free Tenjin officially opened on the ninth floor of Mitsukoshi on Apr. 1. Fukuoka Now went along to the opening ceremony.
After the kagami biraki (a traditional Japanese ceremony at which a cask of sake is opened and sake is passed out), the first wave of shoppers was unleashed upon the store.
This is the only store in Kyushu (outside of airports) where tourists can make purchases without being charged consumption, customs, liquor or tobacco taxes. A staggering 20,000 items are available from over 50 different brands, including cosmetics, perfume, watches, fashion accessories, sunglasses, alcohol, tobacco, and so on. The brands on offer include Kosé (cosmetics), Shiseido (cosmetics), Casio (watches), Seiko (watches), Tumi (luggage), Samantha Thavasa (accessories), Sony (audio appliances), Hennessy (liquor) and Philip Morris (tobacco). You can also buy Japanese-cultured pearls!
The store is elegant in its design, making for a pleasant and unhurried shopping experience – no worries about missing your plane for the sake of a bottle of perfume…
So visitors to Fukuoka should make the trip up to Fukuoka Duty Free Tenjin for an upscale duty-free shopping experience. Visitors will need to present their passport and boarding pass. Customers will receive a special receipt at the time of purchase, which they present at a counter after clearing immigration inside the airport to pick up their goods.
