Japanese Winter Treat – Baked Sweet Potatoes

Winter’s been slow in arriving in Fukuoka, but gradually the chill is setting in. If you find yourself in dire need of a good warm snack, then head to Cocon Farm, located just off of Nishidori in Daimyo and get your hands on a baked sweet potato (yaki-imo), grown in Kyushu’s very own Kagoshima Pref.

You can get the sweet potatoes to go, or sit in Cocon’s indoor cafe, a small, but homely space round the back of the fruit stand. The sweet potatoes are deliciously caramelised and will warm you through. If you don’t feel like eating one right away, put it in a jacket pocket to keep yourself warm as you walk around Fukuoka.

Cocon is also serving hot wine at the moment, alongside its usual range of fruit juices, smoothies and fresh fruit: there’s enough Vitamin C there to keep the scurvy off for a lifetime.
