Nagasaki Court Ruled Against Opening of Isahaya Bay Gate

The Nagasaki District Court reached a judicial decision against opening the drainage gate of Isahaya Bay, fully accepting the complaint made by local farmers. Over the drainage gate of Isahaya Bay, the Fukuoka High Court ordered the opening of the gate in 2010. In the following year, the farmers in the reclaimed land went to court seeking “not to open the gate”. Six years later, the Nagasaki District Court approved the appeal “not to open the gate” on April 17. There is the possibility of serious damage including salt damage and a fear of losing agricultural water after opening the gate. Even if the gates are opened it is not likely that the fishing ground environment of Isahaya Bay and the Ariake Sea will improve. With this conflicting judgement to that of the Fukuoka High Court, future appeals seem likely. Source: TV Asahi, 4/18
