Many foreigners find it difficult to understand the popularity of Japanese “okama entertainment”. It has less to do with sex than the performers’ ability to take audiences of all ages and sexes to a fantasy world using song, dance and humor. Seventeen years ago Tomato got her (his?) break at the Anmitsuhime theatre as a bus boy. Now she’s the star and creative director. Next year there are plans to take the show to Off Broadway in New York. Read on to hear her story…
