Mmmmmm, Mmmmm, Maguro
Fukuoka has one of the largest fish markets in the nation and is renowned for its delicious and inexpensive seafood. Mackerel, horse mackerel and mullet have been traded in huge volumes here since way back and are staples of the local diet. Maguro (tuna) trade and consumption is however minow-sized compared to Tokyo and Osaka. This is the niche that, eight years ago, Hara-san filled with Atom, a restaurant that celebrates everything tuna, and we mean everything! Maguro ramen is one of his most famous dishes. It’s your choice of either light or rich tuna soup with chinese noodles and a slice of grilled tuna on top. Filling, tasty and a healthy change from local pork-broth ramen. Other unique numbers include tuna gyoza, spring rolls, croquettes, tempura and even tuna Chinese dumplings. But before going experimental, order a tuna sashimi plate to discover the diversity of flavors and textures of this magnificent fish. Hara-san will be more than happy to recommend a sake to accompany your meal from his personally selected stock. Atom’s casual neighborhood-diner feel makes it a perfect spot for small groups, who we recommend share a tuna nabe (hot pot).
