Elaborate yet wholesome French-inspired diners with emphasis on vegetables in Minami-ku.
Despite her young age, Mayumi Iwamoto is already attracting attention from foodies, media, and others in the industry as someone likely to make an impact on Fukuoka’s restaurant scene. After graduating from university with a major in visual arts, she travelled through Europe. Impressed by what she tasted, she studied cooking upon her return and then apprenticed at several restaurants. Two-and-a-half years ago she opened her first restaurant in Noma, a residential area in Minami-ku. Along with two other young women, she offers a limited number of “casual French” omakase courses (chef’s specials) for lunch and dinner. Iwamoto’s belief that vegetables are equally as important as meats and fish is evident in amount and variety of fresh vegetables used in her beautiful and complex arrangements. As you eat from one corner to another, your tongue is treated to a surprising number of tastes. It’s obvious that these meals are a labour of love and an expression of her enjoyment in creating something both beautiful and tasty for her guests. A small but very adequate selection of wines are available, and her deserts are delectable too! Reservations for this smallish room are strongly suggested for either lunch or dinner.
