Basque-style foods, beverages and sweets served in small cafe. Located in Umi-machi.
Located near the base of Sangun Mountain in Umi-machi, it’s a 10 minute taxi ride from JR Umi-machi station, or 30 minutes east by car from Hakata. Although access is inconvenient for most, we hope you’ll agree that the journey is worth it. Owner Shimada-san, a huge fan of all things Spanish, and in particular, Basque food and culture, opened this small restaurant cafe in November 2007. The menu is constantly being modified, but currently there is a choice of three lunch sets: the Pasta Set, Paella Set, and Txoko Set. Each includes a selection of the daily pinchos, salad, or a drink. In the evenings, there’s nothing to choose from except your budget (¥2,800, ¥3,500, ¥4,800), and perhaps some wine. Txoko (pronounced “choco”), refers to the Spanish phenomenon of gastronomical societies where men gather to cook and enjoy their own food. The spirit of preparing and enjoying good food can be appreciated here – but don’t worry, women are very welcome! And for those with a sweet tooth, Shimada-san’s array of fancy handmade deserts will surely please your palates. Cafe Txoko might be out of the way, but it’s also out of the ordinary – in a good way!
