Ghanian cuisine prepared by Ghanian cook. Cozy but lively atmosphere. Lunches and diners.

Before relocating to Fukuoka with his Japanese wife and four children, jovial Ras Derika spent ten years in Osaka. After 10 years he’s no stranger to Japan, and his Japanese is very pera-pera. In September, Derika’s business partner moved his bar, Guruppachi, to a new location in Yakuin. After discovering Derika’s talent as a chef, particularly of his native Ghanian cuisine, Derika was put in charge of the kitchen, and Guruppachi re-opened as an African restaurant and bar. From noon, three varieties of lunches are offered with your choice of rice, baguette, potatoes, or pho noodles and salad for just ¥800: Chicken Gravy, Peanut Butter Soup, or Tomato Light Soup (¥200 extra for an optional drink). Peanut Butter Soup? You heard right! Though maybe contrary to one’s expectations, this popular Ghanian dish isn’t thick or sticky. Rather, the red-colored clear soup, made with seasonal vegetables, ginger, onion, clove, peanut butter, and chin chin ga (a popular seasoning powder in Islamic foods) is light and refreshing. Derika also recommends his home-brewed bitters made from twelve African roots and other spices. This Tequila-based “natural medicine” is guaranteed to cure what ails you – and put a smile on your face at the same time!
