Jamaican “Jerk”
It’s summertime and if you haven’t checked out Fukuoka’s great beaches – really, what are you waiting for? If you opt for the Itoshima area, there are tons of beaches to choosefrom and some great grub too, if you know where to look. Owned and operated by Japanese rastaman Katsura-san, Natty Dread is the ultimate ananba (hideaway). Five years ago he started his Jamaican jerkchicken stall inside a parked micro-bus by the sea. The bus is now joined to a series of hand built huts. There’s still no running water nor electricity – but plenty of rustic charm and a great seaside view. It’s simply amazing what Katsura and crew can produce here. Authentic, succulentsteel drum BBQ’ed Jamaican jerk chicken, and pork ribs are two favorites. Burgers come in many varieties with all kinds of toppings, such as hand-cured bacon, cheese, onion rings, pineapple, avocado, home-made pickles andmayonnaise – and insidewhole-wheat buns freshly baked on the premises. “Gourmet Rasta Burgers” to go! These babies would be considered amazing in Tenjin, but out by the sea and in the fresh air they’re ecstasy! Beverages offered include Jamaican RedStripe beer, fresh fruit shakes, smoothies (orange, pineapple, mango, etc), soft drinks and cocktails. For the sweet-tooths, try the pineapple coconut cake or Mi-chan’s daily special. It should be clear after just one bite, or just one visit, that Natty Dread is a labor of love. Pound for pound, yen for yen, it’s not just great value – Natty Dread is a great experience. Respect! 100% Respect!
