Cozy, traditional, yet affordable tempura counter located near Yakuin.
Located amongst the modern fashionable shops on Southern-dori near the Yakuin six-way intersection, Sakau, with it’s Showa-era atmosphere almost seems out of place. The truth is, Sakau has been serving tempura here for over fifty years. Second generation master, Chano-san and his wife run this cozy tempura counter by themselves. Surrounded by a thick wooden counter, Chano-san tends the tempura frying pots in the center of the room. It’s almost like he’s on stage. At first he might seem a bit stern, but once the ice has been broken, he and his wife enjoy chatting with customers, and despite their lack of foreign language abilities or an English language menu, foreigners are very welcome. In the evening choose from three sets that include standard tempura favorites such as shrimp, squid, lotus root, shishito (green pepper), and more, plus rice, pickles and a bowl of akadashi (red miso soup). You can start with a set and then order extras à la carte, or just order what you like from the start. Dip your tempura in ponzu or salt. Chano-san says there’s no right nor wrong way to enjoy tempura. He’ll even provide you with mayonnaise or chilli powder if you want it. Highly recommended as a spot to enjoy “traditional” and reasonably priced tempura. Space is limited, so calling in advance is advised.
