BBQ Ribs – Righteous!
Sniff, sniff, sniff mmm, BBQ pork ribs! You won’t need an address nor map to find Yakiton. Just get near Kego four-way intersection and follow your nose; the smoky aroma will be your guide. Yakiton’s owner, Tanabe-san, opened this tiny (and we mean tiny) eat-in/take-out ribs joint three years ago. Back in the early nineties when he lived in Toronto he first experienced pork ribs, North American style (and size!) At Yakiton, the ribs are huge by Japanese standards, and drenched in a familiar sweet soy sauce blend. Using the finest shoulder-area cuts and broiled over extremely hot charcoals, these ribs are simply succulent. What’s more, at 800 yen for an order of ribs, bowl of salad and someハfiery hot homemade kimuchi, they’re good value too. For another 200 yen, you get a bowl of rice and their pork and veggie soup. The only other item on the menu is grilled pork trotters – a Kyushu favorite, but not one of yours truly! Yakiton is often packed, so you might want to make reservations, or sit on the make-shift bench in front of the shop and drool. Take out orders are popular too and can be booked by phone. Yakiton is already frequented by many foreigners – and more are welcomed. Check it out!
