This wine bar shares name and owners with the antique kimono shop Yumekichi Kimono and, fittingly, the staff all wear traditional Japanese dress. The interior of the 50-year-old building is decorated in an art deco style and the first floor is spacious with big windows and a river view. Those craving a little more intimacy can head to one of the tables in the basement, which actually used to be a communal bath. More than 200 bottles of red, white, rose and sparkling wine are kept in stock and they have a particularly good stock of bio wines because, says owner Mr. Tokunaga, “they are kinder to the body – you can really tell the difference the next morning.” Wine aficionados can also order a set (¥2,500) of four different reds and four different whites. The food includes chicken liver in worcester sauce (¥600), which goes very well with a good red and an exquisitely salted sardine, white onion pizza (¥900) and daily specials. A variety of cheeses and Japanese pickled vegetables are also on offer, a result of Mr. Tokunaga’s desire to provide dishes that are both healthy and go well with wine.
