Title of study: A Spoken Corpus of Foreign Patient Narratives for Nursing English

Purpose: I plan to create a collection of 100 audio recordings of stories from foreign-language residents and visitors about their experiences seeking medical care in Japan.

Significance: These recordings will be used to create e-learning materials for Japanese nursing students focusing on improving their English listening ability and their understanding of the linguistic and cultural challenges facing foreign-language patients.

Selection Criteria: I am looking for people who meet these conditions:

-you are at least 20 years old
-you are a foreign-language resident or visitor in Japan
-your first language is not Japanese
-you have had at least one experience at a Japanese hospital or clinic in which you experienced culture shock or communication breakdown
-you can talk about your experience in English for 15-30 minutes.

*Ideally, I intend to recruit an equal number of men and women. Additionally, I hope to maintain a balance of 4 non-native English speakers to 1 native English speaker.

*Based on the number of applications already received, you may not be asked to participate in this study.

Time Commitment: The entire session should take 45-60 minutes. You will be expected to tell your story for 15-30 minutes.

Location of the Research: The session can take place at a public facility close to your residence or my office at the university. You will be responsible for any transportation fees.

Compensation: You will receive a 2000 yen gift card.
