There are many doors in Fukuoka. Some lead to mundane smoky pachinko halls were elderly folks send balls flying about in the machine with dry amusement. Some lead to steamy rooms where middle-aged men sit around with barely a towel to cover their shame. And then there is one unique door that leads to a curiously cozy bar that is undoubtedly one of the best-hidden gems in town! Ken, the owner, and transplant from New York has brought some flavor from the lower East Side to create a communal space for musicians to meet and vibe with each other. From 8 pm to midnight local bands, musicians or anyone who can play a few chords is welcome to jam on the house provided instruments, all that is required is that you buy one drink. Ken, an avid musician, is also happy to join in. After midnight, the place turns into a hangout with anything from rock, reggae, grunge R&B or even the local rapper playing on the sound system. New to town and not sure what spots to check out? No worries, Ken is more than happy to give you the inside dish on where to find the kicks you’re looking for. If you something to tide you over before you head out to a suggested ramen yatai, grab some fried chicken or a cheese pizza. Ken has obviously poured a lot of himself into this bar and it shows. It’s well worth a visit, it may fast become your new favorite hangout. (IG: tribebarjapan)
