Yamaboushi – Auberge
Since 2005, Michiyo Kobayashi has served seasonal kaiseki ryori inside a beautifully reformed old Japanese country home located in a very pastoral area of Nijo, Itoshima. Last month (Aug. 2019) she opened a fully-detached spacious auberge that can comfortably sleep five. The ground floor has a bath and a large living room with a wood-burning stove. The loft features tatami mats which can be used as a space to enjoy tea or to sleep three on futon. There’s plenty to do in the area. Kobayashi recommends walking down to the coast to see the sunset (35 minutes), or the nearby hot spring. She’s more than happy to help you explore deep Itoshima. Or just stay nearby and discover the beauty of countryside life.

A long-time veteran staff of popular Itoshima eateries including Sunset Cafe, Natty Dread and most recently Itaru, Junko Mitsutake a.k.a. “surfer girl” has finally opened up her place! Using furnishings and colors from the ’70s, she’s kept the former snack bar’s nostalgic Showa era vibe. Not to mention classics like Napolitan Spaghetti, Toast Set (egg, salad), Jun Curry (pork), and a Hamburg Set. However, we recommend her daily lunch with your choice of meat or fish served with miso soup and side dishes made from local produce. A steal at just ¥1,280 (tax incl.)! Alternatively, enjoy one of four daily homemade desserts with freshly ground drip coffee.
