Hiroshima City Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba formally asked Fukuoka City and Kitakyushu to join the exploratory committee he formed with Nagasaki City to try to bring the 2020 Olympics to the cities destroyed by atomic bombs. In response, Mayor Hiroshi Yoshida told the Nishinippon Shimbun they would not join the committee, but rather serve in an advisory role. Mayor Yoshida said the city would cooperate and provide its expertise when asked, but thought the intent of the bid would be vitiated by having other cities participate.
