Hakata Gion Yamakasa Officially Canceled for the Summer of 2020

The organizers of the Fukuoka’s best-known traditional festival held a general meeting on April 20, in which the first cancelation of the event since 1948 was decided. While street events, including the display of kazariyama (huge decorative floats positioned around the city) oiyama (floats race through the streets of Hakata), are canceled, the Shinto ritual to ward off plagues and pray for health will be conducted. On the same day, the committee for Matsubayashi Festival also announced the postponement of that event, which usually takes place along with the Hakata Dontaku Parade on May 3 and 4. The new date is yet to be decided. Sources: Mainichi / Sankei
