The Kyushu Transport Bureau has compiled statistics showing that the number of passengers on Kyushu ferries with round-trip service to Tokyo and Osaka fell 13.2% in the April-September period from the previous year. This is the sharpest decline in six-month passenger totals since the bureau began collecting statistics in 2002. There was also an 18.6% decline in the number of automobiles using the ferries. The survey covered eight routes operated by six companies.
