The Kyushu Bureau of Economy, Trade, and Industry released statistics for convenience store sales in the Kyushu/Okinawa region for May showing a 2.1% year-on-year decline to 57.4 billion yen. This was the first such drop in 16 months. This was attributed to the waning effect of the Taspo cards distributed for use in cigarette vending machines as well as reduced bento sales due to consumer cost consciousness.
