Hard times have befallen the karashi mentaiko business, one of the noted products of Fukuoka Prefecture. Industry sources say that consumption has been falling in recent years, but took a further sharp downturn as economic conditions deteriorated last fall. On the fifth, two local companies filed for bankruptcy in Fukuoka District Court. Thus, five mentaiko companies have now closed their doors in the six months since December 2008.
