Shimizu Corporation will construct a wooden research base on Hashima Island (Gunkanjima), marking the first new structure there since the mine closed in 1974. The facility will serve as a work and rest area for researchers and an emergency shelter. Built on stone foundations using local materials, it will be completed in December and open by March 2026. In partnership with Nagasaki City, the project supports preservation studies for the island’s deteriorating heritage buildings, with plans to incorporate solar power and VR tours.
