Shimizu Corporation will construct a wooden research base on Hashima Island (Gunkanjima), marking the first new structure there since the mine closed in 1974. The facility will serve as a work and rest area for researchers and an emergency shelter. Built on stone foundations using local materials, it will be completed in December and open by March 2026.
