Prefectures to Call for Use of Individual Portable Toilets

Starting this month, Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures will begin asking the roughly 200,000 tourists who climb the Kirishima mountains in both prefectures every year to purchase and bring portable toilets for their trip. The objective is to have the tourists remove their own wastes instead of leaving it on the mountains, where the amount of used toilet paper disposed and people walking off the trails threatens to harm the environment. About 20 organizations, including a local agency of the Ministry of Environment, local governments, and tourist groups, formed a council in April to handle the portable toilets. They will initially lend tourists the devices in May at no charge to determine how many people will use them and the volume of wastes disposed. Later, they will sell them for 500 yen at facilities and lodgings at the base of the mountains, and provide waste receptacles where they can be disposed after use.
