A Saga City non-profit organization that recreates Edo period daimyo processions throughout Japan will participate for the first time in the Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival held in San Francisco on April 18. More than 300,000 Japanese-Americans live in northern California, and San Francisco has one of the country’s three Japan Towns. The parade has been held since 1967. The Saga group’s participation commemorates the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the Japanese ship Kanrin-maru in San Francisco for the ratification of the first commercial agreement between the two countries.
