The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency launched three satellites built by Japanese universities, one of which was from the Fukuoka Institute of Technology, from the Japanese wing of the international space station using a robot arm. This method of placing the satellites into orbit, as opposed to direct insertion by a robot, minimizes the vibration, which makes design easier. All the satellites were 10 square centimeters in size. The FIT satellite is conducting an experiment to determine if the use of flashing light-emitting diodes can send messages to earth.
