It is the seventh book in the Culture Reader series, which showcases local culture, history and customs. The guidebook contains photos and information on approximately 60 castles in the Prefecture, running the gamut from ancient and medieval castles to larger castles of later eras, such as Fukuoka Castle and Kokura Castle. Hideo Hattori, a professor of medieval Japanese history at Kyushu University, edited the volume which was co-authored by nine experts.
