The tests measure durability to tsunami and earthquakes. Genkai No.1 was built 36 years ago and Kyuden representative say “There are no cracks nor erosion, which means it is safe.” The safety commission also said “ It is completely safe until at least until 2033. Kyuden says Genkai No.1 can bear the maximum shock of earthquake 540 gal, and the reactor and used fuel pool can bear 1.61~2.00 times. After the devastating earthquake happened in eastern Japan last year, Kyuden prepared emergency safety measures and they says they can maintain safety for tsunamis up to 13~24.6 m high. In the case of all electric power being lost, a high pressure generation car will pour water into the reactor so that the safety is guaranteed for 65 days. Under the government regulation, after 40 years, nuclear plant has to be closed. The local people are concerned about the condition of Genkai No.1 which is almost 40 years old. Hideo Kishimoto, the town mayor of Genkai cho says “50 years is the limit”. This completed the 1st evaluation results of the 6 nuclear plants which Kyuden operates.
