This year’s list had 14 fewer companies than the previous list released in January 2010, but there were 21 new entries across a variety of fields. The manufacturing sector was best represented with 102 companies (73%), followed by the service industry and retail. On a prefectural basis, the lion’s share of companies (70) hailed from Fukuoka, followed by Kagoshima (19), Nagasaki (11), Miyazaki and Saga (8 each) and Oita and Okinawa (6 each). Conducted once every several years, this was the eighth survey since 1986. Thirteen companies, including fishing lure maker Duel, air conditioner installer Kuken Kogyo and Buddhist altar manufacturer Hasegawa, have made the list every time. Mail order health and beauty goods supplier HRK (Nakagawa-machi) made the cut for the first time as Japan’s biggest seller of edible collagen along with two other niche companies, figurine maker Dive and content developer Dnuo System, also made the list for the first time.
