He spent the latter half of his life in Switzerland, where he amassed his world-renowned collection of impressionist art between 1937 and his death in 1956. In 1960, a foundation established by Bührle’s heirs opened a private art gallery in a villa next to his former residence to showcase the collection. After the theft of four paintings worth CHF 180 million (¥17.5 billion) made worldwide headlines in 2008, public access to the collection was restricted. An agreement has been reached to transfer the entire collection to the Kunsthaus Zürich in 2020.

Claude Monet
“Monet’s Garden at Giverny” (1895)

Paul Cézanne
The Boy in the Red Waistcoat (1888-90)

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
Confettis (1894)

First exhibition in Japan
Paul Gauguin
“The Offering” (1902)

Antonio Canal (Canaletto)
“Santa Maria della Salute, Venice” (1738-42)

All images: ©Foundation E.G.
