The \u201cSetsubun at Sumiyoshi Shrine\u201d scheduled to be held on February 3rd, 2021 has been canceled due to the declaration of a state of emergency.<\/p>\n

The annual Setsubun at Sumiyoshi Shrine will be held next year, 2022. Check back here for details.<\/p>\n

Celebrated across Japan, Setsubun marks the beginning of spring with a ritual in which people throw beans at masked demons and chant, \u201cOut with demons! In with luck!\u201d At Sumiyoshi Shrine, beans are tossed to the crowd every hour from 11:00 to 18:00. Some have fukubiki<\/em> (lucky draw with guaranteed prizes) tickets inside so be sure to catch them! You can also buy fukumame<\/em> (lucky beans, \u00a5500) for a chance to join the fukubiki<\/em>. Tsuina (ceremony to exorcise evil spirits) will also be held at 11:00. A four-eyed creature called hososhi<\/em> appears to drive out demons. <\/p>\n
