On the first day three <em>mikoshi<\/em> (portable shrines) are carried 900 steps (200 m) down Mt. Hikosan. On the second, priests rush them back up to cheering crowds. This ritual transfer of a god\u2019s body away from its main shrine dates back to when asceticism was popular in the area.
