These memorial prints were popular from the mid-Edo to the late Meiji periods. They were primarily produced to announce the passing of a celebrity. The artwork would usually feature a motif that represents death, such as the Sanzu River, lotuses or a depiction of the Buddha&#8217;s Western Pure Land, in order to make it clear that the individual was no longer part of this world.
