Doyama floats were first built in 1704 and featured designs based on stories about graceful and mysterious female protagonists called <em>tsutamono<\/em>. During the Edo period, Doyama floats were also the even-numbered floats of the Yamakasa race, and through their themes, people began to deepen and appreciate their understanding of various Japanese traditions, legends, myths, and classic literature.
