Before WWII, people in Hakata made mochi<\/em> (sticky rice) cakes in the new year to the sound of the shamisen and taiko<\/em> drums, and this tradition re-emerged in 1996. Rice is steamed on a shichirin\u200b<\/em> grill and then pounded. Finally, the mochi<\/em> cakes are handed out to the public on a first-come-first-served basis.<\/p>\n
