Nanakusa refers to seven herbs or seven kinds of grass eaten together on this day as <em>okayu<\/em> (rice porridge) for good health for the rest of the year. The herbs typically include water dropwort, shepherd\u2019s purse, cudweed, chickweed, nipplewort, turnip, and radish. It is also a great detox day for your stomach following over-indulgence on New Year\u2019sYear\u2019s osechi. Interestingly, It was a national holiday during the Edo period. At Gokoku Shrine, the \u201cNanakusa Festival\u201d is held annually to pray for the extermination of evil and no illness by offering the Nanakusa to the shrine. This year attendees will get Nanakusa Mochi instead of Nanakusa-gayu (2 pieces, \u00a5500 with a lucky charm).
