Starting July 1, various events related to the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival take place primarily in the Hakata area, allowing people to experience the unique atmosphere of the festival throughout the city.<\/p>\n

On the morning of July 1, the magnificent Kazari Yamakasa (decorative floats), created annually by Hakata doll makers, are unveiled at 13 locations in the city, while the Kakiyamakasa (carried floats) are set up at seven locations. During the festival, it becomes common to see men dressed in traditional formal wear known as Nagahappi in the streets of Hakata.

The first Yamakasa event of the season, the “Nagaregaki” on July 10, involves men carrying the Yamakasa, which stands about 3 meters tall and weighs around 1 ton, through their respective districts. Leading up to the climax, the Oiyamakasa, participants practice and adjust, eventually running the approximately 5.5 km course in about 20 minutes.<\/p>\n

When a Kakiyama approaches, children known as “Sakibashiri” run ahead holding flags and other items. Be cautious as “Kioimizu” (water of vigor) is splashed generously from the roadside when the Kakiyama passes.<\/p>\n

The final event, the “Oiyama,” begins at 4:59 AM on July 15 with a solemn ceremony at Kushida Shrine. Each team starts at five-minute intervals, running through the streets of Hakata with energetic shouts to the finish line, known as “Mawaridome.”<\/p>\n

By the time the festival ends, the rainy season is over, and full-fledged summer arrives in Hakata.<\/p>\n
