<\/p>\nLocated on Oshima, the largest remote island in Fukuoka Prefecture, stands the World Heritage Site of Nakatsugu in Munakata Taisha. The island is believed to be the origin of the Tanabata legend, and the Altair Shrine and Vega Shrine are nestled on either side of the \u201cMilky Way\u201d stream that flows through Nakatsugu\u2019s precincts.<\/p>\n
The island has a long-standing tradition of celebrating the Tanabata Festival, with vibrant streamers adorning the area from July 7. On August 7, a sacred ritual is held where wishes written on strips of paper are attached to bamboo lanterns and blue bamboo branches in the hope that they will be fulfilled.<\/p>\n
In addition, a local festival begins in the afternoon of the same day, with the path from the boat landing to Nakatsugu decorated with streamers and bamboo branches, imbuing the island with a lively Tanabata spirit. Various activities, including the sale of Oshima\u2019s specialty products and stage events, attract many visitors from outside the island.<\/p>\n
On this day, special charter services are also available (Departing from Oshima around 21:00 and 21:45, adults \u00a5600, children \u00a5300) providing an easy way for guests to join the celebrations.<\/p>\n
