<\/p>\nDating back approximately 600 years, the Miyajidake Shrine\u2019s Autumn Festival is an awe-inspiring event. Celebrated to give thanks for bountiful harvests in the autumn and to pray for agricultural prosperity in the spring, this festival is the shrine\u2019s largest and most elaborate of the year. <\/p>\n
One of the highlights is the \u201cGojinkousai\u201d parade, which takes place at 1 p.m. on both the first and final days. Resembling an imperial procession from the Heian period, a chosen \u201cFestival King\u201d dresses in traditional \u201cJuni-Hitoe\u201d (twelve-layer robe) and is carried on a palanquin from Miyajihama Beach to the shrine, a distance of about 2 km.<\/p>\n
