Sengai Gibon (1750\u20131837), the 123rd head priest of Sh\u014dfuku-ji, Japan\u2019s first Zen temple, was an Edo-period Zen monk known for his wit and warm interactions with the people of Hakata. Affectionately remembered as \u201cHakata no Sengai-san,\u201d he remains a beloved figure today. This autumn, Fukuoka Art Museum will present 36 works by Sengai, selected from its collection of more than 200 pieces. The exhibition highlights his distinctive way of conveying Zen teachings in accessible and often playful forms.<\/p>\n
