Using long, pole-like pestles, they pound rice into mochi, which is then shaped to resemble sea cucumbers. On New Year’s Day, the mochi is offered at the shrine. According to tradition, the practice began when fishermen, too busy with a ritual for Emperor Ojin (the shrine’s enshrined deity), substituted sea cucumbers for kagami mochi. Today, the ceremony marks the close of the year and continues as a cherished local custom.

• 12/31 (Wed.)
• 19:00~
• Hakozaki Shrine
• 1-22-1 Hakozaki, Higashi-ku, Fukuoka
• https://www.hakozakigu.or.jp/omatsuri/#winter2

An old year-end ritual at Hakozaki Shrine takes place on New Year’s Eve, featuring a distinctive mochi-making ceremony…

["post-174792","event","type-event","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","location-higashi-ku","event-type-culture","event-type-others","en-US
["GET
