Every January, Fukuoka City Museum exhibits the national treasure Heshikiri Hasebe, a famed sword once owned by Kuroda Kanbei, the strategist who laid the foundation for the 520,000-goku Fukuoka Domain. According to legend, it was presented to him by Oda Nobunaga in recognition of his service. Passed down as a family heirloom of the Kuroda clan, it was later donated to the City of Fukuoka and is now one of its most treasured cultural assets.
\nA masterpiece by swordsmith Hasebe Kunishige, its name\u2014heshikiri, or \u201cpress cutter\u201d\u2014refers to its reputed sharpness, said to cut without being swung. With its refined form, sharpness, and dignified presence, the sword is admired not only as a weapon but also as a work of art worth seeing up close.<\/p>\n
