One of Nagasaki\u2019s most iconic Obon traditions, Shoro Nagashi takes place every year on August 15 to honor those who passed away before the Obon season. Bereaved families and local residents pull handmade shoro-bune (spirit boats) through the streets, symbolically sending the souls of the deceased on their journey to the Pure Land.<\/p>\n

Each boat bears a family crest, family name, or neighborhood name, and is often decorated to reflect the deceased\u2019s personality, interests, or passions. As dusk falls, the sound of bells and chants of \u201cDoi, Doi\u201d echoes throughout the city, while the constant crack of firecrackers accompanies the processions late into the night. The route is especially crowded around Shianbashi, Kencho-zaka, and Ohato, where many of the processions converge.<\/p>\n
