Every September, Nokonoshima\u2019s beach becomes one of Fukuoka\u2019s most distinctive cultural gatherings. More than a music festival, Isla de Salsa brings together artists and audiences from around the world for a day of live performance, dance, food, art, and spontaneous cultural exchange in a tropical setting just a 10-minute ferry ride from the city.<\/p>\n

Now celebrating its 27th edition, the festival returns with one of its strongest lineups yet. Headlined by two-time Latin Grammy Award winners Septeto Santiaguero<\/strong>, this year\u2019s program also features reggae singer Metis<\/strong>, Afrobeat-inspired Japanese festival band AJATE<\/strong>, improvisational percussion collective LA SE\u00d1AS<\/strong>, Fukuoka\u2019s own ethnic trance band HABANA<\/strong>, and a diverse mix of world music, dance, and cultural performances across three stages.
\nSet on the sandy shores of Nokonoshima Camp Village, Isla de Salsa is as much about the atmosphere as the music. Palm trees, sea breezes, international food and drink stalls, art, and three stages of live performances create a relaxed island festival unlike anything else in Fukuoka. More Than a Music Festival<\/h4>\n

Despite its name, Isla de Salsa has always been about much more than Latin music.
\nThe festival takes its inspiration from the idea of salsa itself: different ingredients coming together to create something entirely new. Every year, musicians, dancers, artists, food vendors, and festivalgoers from diverse backgrounds gather on Nokonoshima to celebrate creativity, curiosity, and human connection.<\/p>\n

This spirit is reflected in the festival\u2019s subtitle, World Beat Matsuri<\/strong>. Rather than simply presenting a series of concerts, the organizers draw inspiration from the Japanese tradition of a matsuri – a community celebration where people come together to share music, food, culture, and experiences. Throughout the day, audiences are encouraged to become part of the festival itself, whether joining an impromptu dance circle, discovering unfamiliar musical traditions, or simply enjoying conversations with people from around the world.<\/p>\n

World-Class Live Music<\/h4>\n

Leading this year\u2019s lineup is Septeto Santiaguero<\/strong>, one of Cuba\u2019s finest contemporary traditional music ensembles and a two-time Latin Grammy Award winner. Celebrating more than 30 years together, the acclaimed group has become one of the world\u2019s foremost ambassadors of Cuban son, guaracha, and bolero, blending authentic eastern Cuban traditions with vibrant contemporary arrangements. Their long-awaited return to Japan promises to be one of the highlights of this year\u2019s festival.<\/p>\n

The supporting lineup is equally impressive.
\nReggae singer Metis<\/strong> is known for her powerful vocals and uplifting songs promoting life, love, and peace. Her signature hit Mother\u2019s Anthem established her as one of Japan\u2019s best-known reggae artists, while her performances continue to resonate with audiences across generations.
\nTokyo-based AJATE<\/strong> has earned international acclaim by combining Edo festival drumming, Afrobeat, self-made bamboo instruments, and soaring shinobue flutes into an explosive live experience. Their performances at WOMAD UK, major European festivals, and recognition by Songlines magazine have established them as one of Japan\u2019s most exciting world music acts.
\nPercussion collective LA SE\u00d1AS<\/strong> brings a completely different approach to live performance. Using the Argentine improvisation system Rhythm with Signs<\/strong>, musicians respond to more than 100 conductor\u2019s hand signals to create performances that evolve in real time, ensuring that no two concerts are ever the same.
\nReturning to Isla de Salsa is Fukuoka\u2019s own HABANA<\/strong>, whose hypnotic fusion of sitar, didgeridoo, djembe, electronic beats, and distinctive woven bamboo hats has made them a long-time favorite on Kyushu\u2019s festival circuit.<\/p>\n

Special guest SUI<\/strong>, the young flamenco dancer who gained international attention through Got Talent, joins a program that also includes gospel, ska, Bon Odori-inspired performances, and other artists representing musical traditions from around the world.<\/p>\n

Music is only part of the experience.
\nThroughout the day, Nokonoshima Camp Village is transformed into a vibrant festival village where international food stalls, art installations, workshops, and informal performances spread across the beach and surrounding grounds. Freshly prepared cuisine from around the world, handcrafted decorations, and the relaxed island atmosphere make it easy to spend an entire day exploring between performances.<\/p>\n
