Best known for his <em>ukiyo<\/em>-e painting series \u2018Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji\u2019, Hokusai\u2019s portrayal of a bright red Mount Fuji and big blue tidal waves has become an iconic image of Japan and fixture on many postcards and prints. His art has been praised from the Edo period through to modern day Japan and has created a sensation in Europe, attracting many students from overseas.
