The king has started to distrust his people and begun to kill them off one after another. When Melos, a naïve young shepherd tries to assassinate the king, he is arrested. In order to attend his younger sister’s wedding, the king allows Melos to postpone his execution for three days. In exchange, Melos’s friend Selinuntius is left as a hostage. If Melos does not come back in three days time, before sundown, his friend will be executed instead of him. Once the wedding is over, Melos runs over the hills and through the forests. But the raging river, attacks by bandits and the devil’s whisper get in his way. Despite these tribulations, Melos runs; for his friend who believes in him and waits for him to return. “Tonight, I will be killed. I run to be killed.” Run, run, run Melos! At sundown he arrives in the town and fulfils his promise. When the king sees the two young men hugging each other tightly and crying for joy, he repents of his tyranny and peace returns to the town.
