A special exhibition is now on at Fukuoka City Museum to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the first Zen temple in Japan \u201cShofukuji\u201d. This beautiful temple including a spacious garden area (open to public) is located within walking distance of Hakata Station. Most of the buildings are off limits to visitors, so this exhibition is a very rare chance to see this historic collection including many priceless items which have never been loaned out before. One of the highlights of the collection is the oldest wooden sculpture of the Buddhist monk Daruma, a patriarch of Zen. No one knows who made it but it is believed to belong to the Nanbokucho period (1336~1392). Besides this there are more than 200 treasures of this most important temple – and treasure of Fukuoka.<\/p>\n
