The competing speakers, who must be born outside of Japan with no Japanese education in their native countries, are selected by their schools or teachers. Providing an opportunity for foreign students to show their Japanese learning outcomes, the contest is in two parts: Japanese language class students stage (16 entries), and Japanese language school students stage (13 entries).
