Operated by local fishermen and cooperatives, these temporary oyster huts—simple, bustling, and unmistakably Itoshima—serve up freshly harvested oysters sold by the kilogram. Diners grill them right at their tables, cracking open the shells as the juices sizzle and steam rises.

It’s a ritual that draws crowds of regulars and first-timers alike. On weekends the ports hum with energy, families and groups lining up for a taste of the season. For a quieter visit, go on a weekday or just after opening, when the grills are hot but the pace is still unhurried.

Cultivated in Itoshima’s clear, nutrient-rich waters, the oysters are known for their plump texture and rich, creamy sweetness. This season, 25 huts will open from October 2025: 24 spread across the five fishing ports of Itoshima City—Fukuyoshi, Kafuri, Funakoshi, Kishi, and Fukae—and one more at Karatomari Fishing Port in Nishi-ku, Fukuoka City. Prices for the 2025–26 season start at around ¥1,200 per kilogram in Itoshima and ¥2,000 at Karatomari.

At Fukuoka Now, we are independently researching the atmosphere and scale of each fishing port, as well as the seafood and original dishes made with oysters. The ambiance and services vary by fishing port and oyster hut, so we recommend finding your own favorite.

The Oyster Hut Guide 2025-2026 will be updated regularly (last updated on Dec. 11, 2025).

Opening date of each oyster hut
October 1
• Kishi: Noburin

October 4
• Funakoshi: Kaki House Shoei

October 11
• Kishi: Mirukugaki Toyohisa-maru, Fuji-maru
• Funakoshi: Kaki House Mokkun, Maruhachi Hikitsu-maru, Senryu-maru, Horyo-maru

October 12
• Funakoshi: Ken-chan Kaki

October 18
• Kishi: Daiei-maru, Daikoku-maru, Ebisu-maru

October 23
• Kishi: Tokuei-maru

October 24
• Kishi: Nisshin-maru

October 25
• Kishi: Nakamiya-maru
• Kafuri: Sumiyoshi-maru, Hiro-chan Kaki

October 29
• Fukuyoshi: Kaki no Masuda

November 1
• Kishi: Koei-maru
• Funakoshi: Hattoriya
• Fukuyoshi: Shinei-maru, Hiryu-maru
• Fukae: Kaisen Nikomaru

December 6
• Karatomari: Karatomari Ebisu

Opening date to be determined
• Kishi: Kyokusei

How do they work?

The kakigoya are mostly run by small, family-owned fisheries or local restaurants, and their simple and casual atmosphere accounts for much of their charm and appeal. Most have rows of low tables and are outfitted with charcoal or gas-fueled barbecues. We prefer the charcoal barbecues as they give a more rustic experience!

Each hut accommodates between 30 and 300 persons. There’s usually a reception counter and fish tanks close to the entrance. At the reception, put your name on a list to get a table and pick up all the necessities: cotton gloves, tongs, shucking knives, sauces and, of course, trays of fresh oysters. Most huts also offer other seafood and simple side dishes. Menus and prices can be found outside the kakigoya and posted inside on the walls.

On weekends, kakigoya can be very busy and there are often lines to get in. Go early (before 11:00) and line up or, even better, go on a weekday to beat the crowds. Some huts allow you to bring in food and drinks but each hut has different rules. Please confirm before doing so! Some patrons bring in their own sauces, some even bring bottles of wine – but remember to ask in advance.

It’s pretty much all self-serve and you barbecue everything yourself. There are some tricks to learn, such as which side of the oyster to put on the grill first (flat side up) and how long to wait before rotating the shells. The friendly staff are happy to demonstrate. When cooked, the oysters should pop open from the heat. To eat, use the supplied knives to pry them open and detach the oyster from the shell.

Apply your favorite sauce or seasoning as desired and enjoy your beautifully cooked oyster!

Prices and Policies

Oyster prices change depending upon the volume harvested. Large groups using more than one table will have to pay a fee for each table used.

Grilling other foods: most huts offer other seafood for grilling, which you can buy and grill. However, some huts allow customers to bring extra foods, sauces and even drinks. This generosity should not be abused, nor should you grill any food not purchased from the hut. ALWAYS clarify such points before you sit at your table.

Hints & Tips!

• It can get smoky inside the huts. Adequate, but not special, and most likely not wheelchair-friendly.
• Oysters are available for take out. Bring a suitable bag or cooler. This year’s new dish is foil-baked salmon with shimeji mushrooms.

• 11/1 (Sat.) ~ 3/31 (Tue.) 2026
• 10:00~17:00 (16:00 L.O)
• Closed: Irregular
• Capacity: 150 people (30 tables)
• Reservations: Accepted
• What you can bring: Drinks, rice, sausages and meat (¥500 charge for meat)
• Credit cards: Accepted (PayPay and transit IC cards accepted)
• Foreign language menu: None
• Gas charge ¥500 *Table charge is waived on Mondays and Fridays.
• Free use of jumpers
• 092-326-6697
• https://shineimaru-sasaki.com/index.html
• https://www.instagram.com/shineimaru_sasaki/
• Side menu (tax. incl.) : Kuruma ebi set (1 pc.) ¥500, noble scallop ¥300, scallop ¥500, oyster rice ¥350, foil-baked salmon with shimeji mushrooms ¥700

Hiryu-maru (Kaki no Abe) / 飛龍丸（カキの阿部）

*The following information is from last year.
